Ellison lived a life of poverty when he was growing up, hopping train after train to make it where he wanted to go. As he is going through his tough life, he as treated as an underclassman and was not treated the way other races were treated. He was black and therefore ignored, like an invisible man. Even though he wrote this book as a fiction book, he wanted to bring in true ideas and events in real life into this book to mirror society. This book pretty much answers the essential question, "How does fiction mirror society?"
The book started off when he was ill and impulsively wrote down, "I am an invisible man." He went on with that one sentence over seven years and made it a 600 page novel. After seven years, he was able to put in a bunch of experience and situations into this book to make it as detailed and powerful as it can be.
