Qatar is a very small country, about the size of 2 Chicagos with a population of one Chicago, and has only existed since 1971. But with such little years in existence, it surprisingly has boat loads of money. This country has struck a natural gas abundance on their land. Also, this country has saved up so much in order for something like this to happen. With the natural gas and investments, they have become one of the richest states in the world, relatively over night. Qatar is famous for its sporting events, the Qatar Golf Course, Qatar Open and WTA Championships for Tennis. Their soccer team has always wanted to be in the World Cup but couldn't, so instead of going to the World Cup, the World Cup is coming to them. What is nice about this whole incident, they are getting a lot of publicity and may become a huge powerhouse despite the size of the country.
Since the country is basically on the equator, how will players and spectators deal with the sweltering heat? The article already touched on a new cooling system and uses solar power to provide zero-carbon air conditioning. But since it is new technology will this actually work? But what is nice is that after the tournament, they plan to tear down the stadium and rebuild it in smaller pieces in countries that are struggling with the heat.
Also, Israeli's are apparently banned from entering the country, so will this bring religious controversy? Will the religious war spark again because of this tournament?
This site has a really positive opinion on the issue of the heat in the country. They believe that this new air conditioning technology will definitely work and being temperatures down from 50 Celsius to 30 degrees Celsius, which is will happen not only in the stadiums but surrounding sport centers around. They also invite the fact that the world will be introduced to a new culture, which the World Cup is all about.
Rapprochment - an establishment of harmonious relations
